APEC Workshop on Food Safety

11/11/2015

From September 23 to 25, 2015, in Santiago, Chile, the workshop “Promoting International Trade through Updated Food Safety Regulations” was held for APEC member economies.

The workshop brought together speakers and delegates from 13 APEC member economies. Vietnam sent representatives from the Codex Office of the Vietnam Food Administration and the Standards Department of the Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality to attend.

At the event, speakers from Canada, the United States, Japan, Chile, and New Zealand presented updates on food safety regulatory systems in their respective economies that impact international food trade. The workshop actively discussed opinions and best practices from each country to harmonize food safety regulations and explored the potential for mutual recognition among APEC economies regarding food standards and food safety control systems.

The workshop also heard reports from several Asian and Latin American countries on prominent food safety issues in their nations and the measures taken to address them. The Vietnamese delegation delivered a presentation on the national food safety management system, key challenges, and responsive measures to ensure consumer food safety without hindering international food trade.
